Throughout the 50's Chester Barrie became known for its classic but elegant styling, from suits to top coats and evening attire. Chester Barrie became so popular after the war that there was a demand for its product in other stores outside of Savile Row. Being a Ready to Wear product (and not bespoke) enabled the product and brand to be displayed and sold 'off the Row', unlike many of it's neighbours! Indeed, the name became so famous at the time, that they signed a contract with Harrods of Knightsbridge.
In the UK Chester Barrie was stocked in all the major outlets, from Gieves & Hawkes and Liberty to Burberry and Austin Reed (later to own Chester Barrie).
Into the 60's and 70's, the demand for Mr Ackerman's Chester Barrie suits was extensive and international. Stores through-out the world clamoured to stock his clothes. In the States, Saks Fifth Avenue and Bergdorf Goodman were good customers, as were Old England in Paris. Throughout Europe, Chester Barrie became known for quality and fit.
