With black tie season dawning and bringing with it thoughts about what to wear, we have looked back to the Chester Barrie sponsored 2018 Olivier Awards earlier this year for some style inspiration.
Giles Terera deserves credit not only for his award (many congratulations), but also for getting it spot on with his sharp, Mogador-faced, peak lapel beauty dinner suit. Alfie Enoch wears the same suit in a similarly dashing fashion, while Jason Donovan opts for a Mogador-faced shawl collar. You may have spotted a theme here: all of the Gold Label Chester Barrie black tie suits have Mogador-faced lapels. It is our traditional house style.

Colour is a wonderful way to variegate your traditional suiting choices. Frank DiLella wears his with a blue tinge to the jacket. Joe Mc Elderry’s suit forms a layering of shades within one colour: the dark chocolate brown jacket; slightly lighter cuffs matching the bow tie; and finishing with the light brown, shawl lapels.

Joe McFadden’s coolly matches dark blue velvet jacket with black trousers in a pairing that challenges a chilled glass of Muscadet and oysters for suitability. It’s not often you get given a masterclass on how to do black tie colour as a group. Five Guys Named Moe curate red, two different shades of brown and a black suit, all pinned together with a white tuxedo centrepiece. This is how to look zesty on the red carpet, risk free.
Let’s talk about that liminal colour which haunts the black tie colour spectrum: grey. While David Gandy shook the tradition tree back in 2016, looking impeccable in a grey Chester Barrie tuxedo jacket, some of this year’s brand ambassadors saw this as a colour challenge. Adam J. Bernard wears the grey tuxedo jacket, black trouser combination perfectly and as a feature piece in this year’s collection, it’s a colour to think about investing in.
